Adolescence is a crucial developmental phase in life. Experience has shown us that a troubled adolescence can negatively affect healthy functioning in adulthood and that managing difficult issues promptly ensures a better outcome for the emerging adolescent self and eventual adult self. Dr Terri Henderson’s clinical experience working with adolescents for more than a decade has shown her that the challenges that adolescents face are many, but relatively similar, regardless of culture or background. This book aims to guide adolescents, and those who care for and work with them, to better understand these challenges and how to deal with them. Adolescents have much to offer, and a better understanding of our teens is advantageous to all. Using a conversational style with relatable text, Dr Henderson hopes that teens will find a welcome “friend” in this book; understand that they are not alone – their experiences are shared by countless others; and that they will benefit from the practical guidance and support provided.

I read this book in one sitting. As a parent of two teens, the book has given me so many valuable insights into just how tough it is to be a teen. I’ve learnt the importance of empathy in raising teens (although, this is not an explicit message of the book). The book is straight talking, with short, easy to digest chapters, that deal with issues we see around us, but haven’t necessarily got a grip on. The illustrations are tender and evocative. An accessible book for teens and parents alike, brimming with clearly articulated facts and implications.

Dr Terri Henderson really understands teens and their passage of time in a “difficult world”. This is a quintessential account of adolescence for teens, parents and importantly mental health practitioners to read and gain further insights. It is written with lively, refreshing content and humor. A must read.

Excellent read. As a parent it debunks a lot of the stigmas and incorrect perceptions around the mental challenges some teenagers face, including my own. It opened up a new way of thinking and embracing these conditions – and in doing so, dealing with them a whole lote easier.
