The Pilgrim’s Journey to the Dwelling Place of God
The High and Lofty One, Whose name is Holy, dwells in the vastness of eternity, the heavens His throne, the earth His footstool. Yet, in a mystery that bends the mind, He stoops to whisper at the door of man. “Behold,” He says, soft as a breeze through the soul’s lattice, “I stand and knock. Open to Me, and I will come in. I will make you Mine.” A spark flickers beneath the skin; a divine ember stitched into the fabric of our being: imago Dei, made in His image, after His likeness, man and woman alike. Not mere clay, but vessels of spirit, cradling a capacity for the infinite.
The story unfolds in a timeless, allegorical landscape that mirrors the pilgrim’s internal spiritual discovery. The setting is intentionally sparse, featuring archetypical locations that endure through timeless generations. The environments represent universal stages of spiritual journeys of desolation, introspection, trial and rest. The pilgrimage is internal, with a universally human experience, accessible to anyone at any point in time.
Are you a pilgrim, on a mission to find the dwelling place of God? How far have you travelled on your pilgrimage? How many times did you wander off the trail, wasting years in searching in all the wrong places? What if I tell you that God does not reside in a single palace, with streets of gold, and where the sun and the moon never shines. Although He is from eternity, like Isaiah has declared, and He is in Heaven, He is also so near that it remains a mystery to mankind, something that the simple mind finds difficult to comprehend.
In this short trialogue between a pilgrim and his poet and teacher friends, the secret of God’s dwelling is revealed in deep poetry and simple discourse. The Word of God in Romans 3:10-12 declares that no one is righteous, and no one really understands or seeks God. It says that no one is good, not even one. How can this ancient revelation of God’s hidden dwelling comfort the burdened soul with its own unrighteousness and understanding of the presence of God?
The purpose of The Pilgrim’s Journey is to invite the pilgrim who struggles with the questions of the heart to rediscover the simplicity of brokenness, contrition and poverty of spirit. The story finally concludes when the protagonist transforms from student to teacher in a commissioned life and as a mature spiritual being, passing on the wisdom gained.
