Journey of a Lifetime covers the first fifty years of the author’s life. It is a story of perseverance and adventure. Nigel relates how he grew up in a dysfunctional family and adjusted to an education that demanded flexibility of mind and determination. The South Africa he knew and the wider world of his childhood and youth have passed into history and much of his everyday experiences might seem foreign to younger generations. Traumatic events were endured with fortitude, and, from an early age, he learned to take responsibility for his own future. Despite having been largely overlooked in high school, he was accepted for training as an officer in the Royal Navy and subsequently, the South African Navy.
The book gives an insight into the thoughts, aspirations, disappointments, triumphs and personality of a determined introvert against the background of a changing South Africa. It also shares Nigel’s many adventures at sea and what it’s like to serve in the navy.

Journey of a Lifetime is the first book that I have read cover to cover for some years now. I found the story riveting.
The story of one man’s endeavour to find his own place in the sun. The story of a willingness to keep learning and move forward even in times of adversity, and to appreciate the good moments in life and the people who are part of them. The writing style is magical, straightforward, honest, and filled with humour around every corner. This gave me the feeling that I was listening to the authors story being told to me by the man himself. This made for a wonderful read always urging me to turn the
page.
I thoroughly enjoyed the accurate accounts of the history of the time, lending depth to the story. Although not a naval person myself, I found the naval background upon which the story unfolds extremely interesting. This book is highly recommended. for anyone who just wants a really good read!
Congratulations to the first-time author for a job well done!

Once I started reading, I had to continue to the end. The story is fascinating, taking me back to my national service in the South African Navy and the interesting years that followed. The story is sensitively and well told. I found it a very enjoyable read.
